Electronic Driver Logbook (New Zealand)
Overview
New Zealand's Land Transport Act requires drivers of heavy vehicles and those providing commercial transport services to maintain accurate records of their work and rest hours. Traditionally this has been managed through paper-based logbooks, which are prone to inaccuracies, can be easily damaged or lost, and are often only reviewed by back-office staff days after a shift is completed.
Electronic Driver Logbooks (EDLs) are approved by the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) as a digital alternative to paper logbooks. An EDL can be used as the sole record-keeping method — no paper logbook is required — to manage and demonstrate compliance with New Zealand's fatigue management legislation.

Key Capabilities
-
Real-time Fatigue Dashboard — Provides live work and rest hour information for all drivers, eliminating paperwork and manual processes.
-
Driver Interface — Drivers can view their current status, start work or rest periods, check rest break calculations, and see available work hours directly on the in-vehicle device.
-
Proactive Alerts — Drivers and managers are notified before a rest break is required, enabling proactive fatigue management rather than reactive violation handling.
-
Automated Compliance Calculations — The complexities of New Zealand's fatigue rulesets are handled automatically, removing the need for manual interpretation of legislation.
-
Scheduling & Available Hours — Real-time and historical insights into hours worked allow dispatchers to allocate jobs based on available driver hours, ensuring drivers complete journeys within legal limits.
-
Audit & Reporting — Reports are compiled in a few clicks and easily exported. Driver non-compliance events and outcomes are recorded, automating audit preparation and eliminating data-entry errors.
-
All-in-One Device — The same in-vehicle device provides checklists, messaging, job progress tracking, and forms alongside the EDL — streamlining driver workflows on a single platform.
